Post What was your gateway to RPGs?

I was a freshman in high school when I was invited to play the tabletop Everquest game (I was already playing the EQ mmo). I think we might have rolled up characters and started outside Freeport in the Desert of Ro (if you're familiar with the game), but I don't think we actually got to playing. A few weeks later my friend and I joined up with some other people from school and ended up playing D&D 3rd edition. Continued playing and a few weeks later I was hooked and started DMing my own games. Bwahaha!

The thing I love about it is that its an outlet for creativity but its also a structured game that has a basis for beginners to join in. And it's a social hobby that keeps you from isolating yourself. MMORPGs always make me feel isolated even though there are thousands of other players online. Tabletop games just give you that group camaraderie that you cannot get from video games...

So, what was your gateway to RPGs?

A long time ago in a galax-
Well, a long time ago... A friend of mine first learned about D&D, and invited a group to give it a shot. Back then, we didn't go farther than just creating our character sheets, though. Soon after that, a little something called Neverwinter Nights introduced me to what was a pseudo version of D&D, and I liked it. And then, those old character sheets were finally used, and I joined my first real D&D game.

Because our DM was inexperienced at the time, the story was simple, and even messed up. You couldn't take that thing seriously, as hard as you tried. That soon changed, and he became my first proper AND Sadistic DM (folks, you don't send an ogre mage against a party of lvl 2 characters...).

A year later, I was trying my hand at DMing, and found the pleasures of not only delivering a story created by myself, but of tormenting players with harsh (but realistic) consequences for thoughtless actions. *enter evil smiley grin here*
I also found this to be a perfect outlet for the stories that pop up in my head, as Eric mentioned. I've tried my hand at novels, games, and even comics before, but nothing beats seeing your ideas coming to life and watching others actively participate in 'em with some paper, pen, and a few dice rolls... Especially when the others are good role-players.

Bwahaha! Early in my DMing career I sent a tribe of ettins and ogres after my players. (Did I mention it was two players and they were both level 3?)
They did, however, have the help of the enslaved dwarves they freed. And there was a war between 2 goblin tribes in the same scene. (A lot of chaos! And blood. And death...)
